Does Israel have a president?
Yes. Moshe Katsav is the current President of the State of Israel (elected July 31, 2000) . The president is elected by the Knesset for a seven-year term. The President ' s role is to protect the national system and the unity of the citizens of the State. The President of Israel rarely gets involved in politics.
In contrast, the Prime Minister of Israel (currently Ariel Sharon) is very involved in politics. Laws and policy are essentially made by the Prime Minister, who controls enough votes in the Knesset to pass most legislation. |
