Israel's First Elections
Israel's first elections were an historic moment for the country. They were held in January 1949. Israel is a democracy (the only one in the Middle East), giving its citizens the ability to vote for who should be in charge.
The first elections were held for the 120 member Knesset ( Israel’s legislative branch). The Knesset has a major impact on the laws that are formed. As a result of the elections, David Ben Gurion was elected Israel's first Prime Minister and Chaim Weizmann was elected as Israel’s first President.
From then on, elections were held every four years.
F.Y.I. The Hebrew word for "elections" is "bechirot".
